Last Friday, March 28, 2014 in the Albany Times Union, we came across the article “Shopportunist: Putting cap on medicine cost” which we believe contains very useful information on how to manage your prescription drug costs.
If you are not covered under a prescription drug plan, you’ll see there are a number of options that will help you follow your doctor’s drug therapy recommendations with very low out-of-pocket cost to you.
If you are covered under an Rx plan already, the article suggests some options (e.g., mail order) that can lower your costs – and potentially your employer’s as well, if your Rx benefit is provided through work.

Whether insured or not, make sure you consider generic drugs whenever possible. Generics must be approved by the FDA prior to being available for sale (the same as the brand drugs) and are considered by the FDA to be identical in dose, strength, route of administration, safety, efficacy, and intended use — and they cost as much as 80% less than the brand alternative. That’s a win/win!
